Meet the artist :

Sugar Ortiz is an indigenous visual artist based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. She is the colourfully creative, zebra-masked, alter ego of Jenn Hill, who is a descendent of both Anishinaabe and Mohawk cultures.

Born in Winnipeg, her first days were spent living in Osborne Village. However, her life was quick to switch to that of a vagabond and she frequently moved across Canada before her family settled on Vancouver Island.

Influenced by indigenous art, along with a creative family, from a young age she had the opportunity to experiment with a variety of arts & crafts. When she completed high school she was encouraged to pursue her interest to study art and in 2007 she received a diploma of Visual Arts from Camosun College in Victoria, BC.

During college she was able to explore new art mediums and discovered she has a passion to be creative in multiple art forms. From painting, print making, sculpture, drawing, film, and photography, to name a few, she has found it is through the creative process where her artwork begins to tell its unique story.

Today she primarily focuses on abstract portraits and large scale pieces, and she continues to expand her creative knowledge by incorporating new techniques and mixing mediums into her artwork.
